As telerradiografias e fotografias têm 2D e não é possível marcar um plano com dois pontos no espaço. Carece-se de três pontos marcar um Plano. Porém por tradição, na cefalometria, costuma-se a chamar de Plano de Frankfurt o que na realidade é uma linha. O mesmo acontece entre nós com o Plano Mandibular.

Assim sendo a definição da linha Frankfurt é a parte mais alta do conduto autivo externo (Po) e a o infraortitário (Or.) É bom que se tenha isto em mente, pois nas imagens radiográricas das telerradiografias, geralmente, aparecem duplos o Po e o Or. Porém isto não é 3D, sabemos que a duplificação é causada pela divergência de raios.

The Frankfurt plane (also called the auriculo-orbital plane) was established at the World Congress on Anthropology in Frankfurt, Germany in 1884 anddecreed as the anatomical position of the human skull. It was decided that a plane passing through the inferior margin of the left orbit (the point called the left orbitale) and the upper margin of each ear canal (the point called the porion) was most nearly parallel to the surface of the earth, and also close to the position the head is normally carried in the living subject.
